The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has rubbished an audio clip circulating online of an alleged secret communication between Suna East MP Junet Mohamed and a senior official at the commission on a plot to rig elections.

Speaking to members of the press on Monday, August 1, 2022, IEBC Vice-Chairperson Juliana Cherera said the clip is not factual.

She, however, confirmed that an investigation is underway and that the clip has been forwarded to experts for examination.

“As far as I am concerned there is nothing factual about it (audio clip). We have our ears in the ground and people on social media who have been monitoring what has been happening, she said adding, “It has been shared out in the pool of experts who shall look into that.”

She urged members of the public to always verify information with official sources including the commission’s social media pages.

“Let me make it categorically clear that the only information that is legitimate came from the commission through the daily press briefings and official social media handles,” she stated.

Yesterday, Junet, one of the vocal allies of Azimio One Kenya coalition presidential candidate Raila Odinga, asked the public to ignore the recording stating that it was a tactic by their competitors to stain their reputation ahead of the August 9 polls.

“The Hon. Junet Mohamed urges the public to ignore the video, which appears to be one of the last desperate acts of a dying political campaign that has been based on years of lies, innuendoes, mudslinging, arrogance, chest-thumping, name-calling, insults and now-waking up to the reality of a lost election-is on a sympathy seeking spree!” the statement reads in parts.

The outspoken legislator further asked investigative agencies to move swiftly and launch investigations on the matter to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book by the law.

“The Hon. Junet Mohamed invites investigative agencies to move with speed and investigate the matter, unearth the perpetrators and bring them to the law,” the statement added.

While defending his honour, Junet further stated that he was busy with the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition campaigns and had no time to plot election rigging.
