Disappointment filled St. Peter’s and Paul’s Catholic Church in Kiambu town after candidates seeking elective seats in Kiambu skipped a prayer meeting convened by the Kiambu clergy and the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK). 

While addressing the media at the venue, Kiambu NCCK chairperson Rev. Simon Murigi however downplayed the boycott saying that the candidates had sent their apologies.

“It’s true we the church leadership under the umbrella of Kiambu County Clergy Forum (JCCF) and the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) had invited all candidates gunning for respective positions but they have sent their apologies”, he explained.

He noted that the forum, in the absence of the candidates offered prayers for them and all the institutions in charge of the elections.

The forum urged candidates to prepare for either a win or loss bearing in mind that there will be only one winner for respective seats.

“In the event, anyone is not satisfied with the results we ask them to consider using available legal procedures as provided for by the constitution,” Rev. Murigi added.

He also prevailed upon winners to celebrate their wins with humility and those who will lose to join hands with winners and work together for the sake of peace and development. 

At the same time, the clergy also regretted that most people have indicated that they will not vote and that voter apathy should be discouraged by all and sundry.

When reached out for comment, candidates who spoke on grounds of anonymity stated that being on the home stretch of the campaign, their schedules would not allow them to attend the prayer meeting.

“We received the invitation but we have a very tight schedule as we approach the election date”, a gubernatorial candidate stated.
