Two counties anoint female governors
The Tuesday election could just have handed one of the biggest victories to Kenya’s womenfolk after they swept many elective positions in two counties.
The two counties are Nakuru and Machakos — where women candidates were last night headed for victory in both gubernatorial and senatorial seats.
In Nakuru county, several women aspirants had already bagged various parliamentary seats, beating many odds to floor their male rivals.
The scenario was the same in Machakos county, where the gubernatorial candidate Wavinya Ndeti and her senatorial counterpart Agnes Kavindu were on course to clinch victory.
In Nakuru, governorship candidate Susan Kihika was on course to clinching the seat.
Preliminary results
Preliminary results from the sub-counties, Senator Kihika — who is vying on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket — has so far won seven out of 11 counties, relegating Governor Lee Kinyanjui to second position. She garnered 39, 878 votes in Kuresoi North against Kinyanjui’s 7,760, and 46,503 in Kuresoi South against his 2,666.
In Molo, Ms Kihika garnered 28, 267 votes while Kinyanjui got 18, 605 in a race that has mirrored the presidential one between Kenya Kwanza’s William Ruto versus Azimio-One Kenya candidate, Raila Odinga
The outspoken Kihika, who is the daughter of the late Molo and Nakuru MP Dicksson Kihika Kimani, also won in Gilgil (39, 303), and Subukia (29,111), against Kinyanjui’s 8, 151.
A similar scenario was replicated in Njoro where Kihika garnered 39, 230 while Kinyanjui got 22, 996.
During the campaigns, Kihika popularised the slogan: “The future is female.”
Other women who triumphed against a male dominated filed include Charity Kathambi (Njoro), Martha Wangari (Gilgil), Jane Kihara (Naivasha), Irene Njoki (Bahati) and Tabitha Karanja (Senator).
A new comer, Njoki walloped veteran politician Kimani Ngunjiri (Jubilee Party).
