Having won just seven matches to finish 17th in the Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) men’s league last season, Nairobi’s Eastlands-based Generation Handball Club has set their sights on a top six finish this season.

The side won seven matches in the 22-team league last season for 14 points but team captain Celestus Okoyana is confident their recruitment is good enough to hand them their first play-off berth.

The team, however, blew hot and cold as the KHF season began last weekend, losing their opener to former champions Black Mamba in a 45-16 outcome.

They made amends in their second match of the season against newbies  Wariors HC to pick a 41-20 win.

Okoyana top scored at six goals in their loss to Mamba while Paul Kakai and Derrick Odhiambo contributed ten and nine goals, respectively in the win against Warriors.

“Getting a win in the first weekend of action is a big motivation for us. We are targeting the playoffs and, despite being aware that it will be no easy task, we are ready to fight to the last match.

We have signed seven players most of whom were making their debut in the premier league and I believe they will do better in our next fixture,” said Okoyana.

Meanwhile, Warriors HC have joined the league with a different agenda from most of the other league teams.

Being a team attached to Murang’a County’s Kangema High School, the youngsters say they are in the league for the experience.
