The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) yesterday summoned Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to record a statement over his financial impropriety remarks targeting Woman Representative Esther Passaris.

The governor recently accused Passaris of claiming a double per diem—from the county government and in Parliament—for an official trip to New York in March.

“You are required to appear at the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission headquarters on August 1 at 2pm,” read a letter by EACC chief executive Twalib Mbarak.

And soon after, Sonko acknowledged the summon and indicated he was ready to step aside should EACC find he has a case to answer regarding his conduct as a public officer.

Step aside

Last evening, County Director of Communication Elkana Jacob confirmed Sonko had honoured the summons in the afternoon.

“In the event, it is established that I have a case to answer before the law, I am ready to step aside to allow the EACC complete investigations,” Sonko wrote on his Facebook account.

Last month, Sonko claimed he had evidence that Passaris was paid per diem by both City Hall and the National Assembly to attend the Commission on the Status of Women caucus in the US.

The two leaders have been on a warpath since they clashed publicly during June 1 Madaraka Day celebrations.
