Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has hinted at taking legal action over Adani’s proposed takeover of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Speaking in Kisii on Friday, Kalonzo announced plans to file a court case on Monday to block the deal.

Kalonzo calls for transparency

The former Vice President emphasized the need for transparency in such significant agreements, saying, “Even if such deals are to happen, there must be openness.”

Kalonzo also praised Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka for his leadership in probing the deal through the Senate.

He described Onyonka as a statesman, commending his stance on ensuring scrutiny regarding the airport’s future.

“On Monday, we will be in court to oppose this sale of the airport. We’re not taking chances. Senator Onyonka, congratulations again; the country is with you, and we know the full story. We want transparency. If, for example, the airport is being sold, let it be done openly. And that’s why I commend your Senator Onyonka for standing firm and saying the airport cannot be sold without proper discussions. You have become a statesman, rising above Kisii County,” Kalonzo remarked.

He urged the people of Kisii to support Onyonka and allow him to campaign across the country with the Wiper team as they work to form a new government that will foster peace.

“This man, you must let us take him across Kenya as we build the next government so that Kenyans can live peacefully,” he added.

Adani defence

Meanwhile, Indian firm Adani Airports Holdings Limited has responded to some legal challenges against the takeover.

In a defence filed at the High Court in Nairobi, Adani argues that the cases are premature, as the project is still in the due diligence phase and has not yet been approved.

The company cited the urgent need to improve JKIA’s infrastructure, stating that its interest in investing and upgrading the airport was sparked by media reports highlighting its deteriorating condition.

Adani submitted a proposal to the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) on March 1, 2024, to initiate the project.
