Three people, including a senior police officer, were injured after a knife-wielding man stormed a church in Kisii town yesterday and stabbed them as a service was underway.

The attacker rushed to the pulpit at Deliverance Church International and tried to stab Rev Peter Rotich, but the cleric was shielded by some of the worshipers.

The middle-aged assailant entered the church in the middle of a sermon and started behaving suspiciously.

“He behaved as if he was mad. He moved to the pulpit and I tried to pull him back before he pulled a knife that he had hidden in a handkerchief, stabbed my hand and then attempted to run away,” Onditi said.

In the commotion, he added, the assailant stabbed Kisii Central sub-county police Commander Isaac Kimwele and churchgoers who tried to protect him, but the man was overpowered and arrested.
