Stalled tanneries projects at Kitengela GK Prison and Kamiti Maximum Prison will be revived through public-private partnerships (PPP), the government has said.

Correctional Services PS Salome Beacco, says the move is meant to make the leather industry profitable.

“Kamiti and Kitengela prisons have in the past been actively involved in lucrative tanning of hides and skins, but the projects have stalled. Effluent disposal from tanning has adverse effects on the environment,” said Beacco.

Speaking after touring the Kitengela prison alongside Livestock PS Jonathan Mueke, the duo said partnerships can enhance profitability, enhance leather skills, and create more jobs.

“With guidelines from environmental experts, we must have proper waste disposal before the two tanneries can continue with production. Due to that concern, we have opted to engage private sector partners involved in leather production to draw a roadmap for reviving the two tanneries.”

Business plan

She added that her ministry will develop an elaborate business plan after wide consultations with all key stakeholders to facilitate and guide the PPP.

PS Mueke highlighted that the country’s current leather capacity stands at the production of 9 million shoes annually, a number that can be tripled in the next two years if proper measures are implemented.

“The government is keen on the value chain of the leather industry. There is a huge potential in the industry both locally and internationally. Quality leather products have a ready market,” said Mueke.

Kitengela GK Prison hosts at least 700 male inmates who are empowered with skills in different sectors, including carpentry.
