Kenya Morans has opened the second leg of the Africa Men’s Sevens tournament with a 26-7 win over Zambia.

The Kenya Morans, who include three players slotted for duty at the Paris Olympics later this month will be keen to better a sixth-place finish in the first leg played last weekend at the same venue.

Dennis Abukuse, Festus Shiasi and Brian Mutua were all included in the starting lineup despite being named in Kenya’s squad to Paris for the Summer Games set for July 24.

Morans quick start

Kenya scored inside the first minute as Amon Wamalwa received Zambia’s long kick off before slicing through the unorganized Zambian defence to race 50 meters for Morans’ first try. Dennis Abukuse would have the easiest of times adding the extra twos to make it 7-0.

Wamalwa would grab his brace moments later, taking a quick tap from the penalty before burging over the whitewash for Kenya’s second try of the game. Abukuse’s attempt at splitting the uprights was successful once again to make it 14-0 early on.

Victor Odhiambo would be the third Kenyan to get on the scoreboard, running an excellent support line to latch onto William Muhanji’s offload to dot down under keen attention from a Zambian defender.

Zambia would then piece together three offloads to score their first try of the game as the Kenyan defence ran out of numbers on that particular occasion, leaving the scores at 19-7 in favour of Morans heading into the breather.

Amon Wamalwa would then secure his hat trick, once again exploiting a gap in the Zambian defence to score under the uprights. Wamalwa would convert his own try to give Kenya a comfortable 26-7 lead in what would be the only try in the tightly contested second half.

Morans are pooled alongside Madagascar, Zambia, and Algeria in Group B of the second leg of the Africa Men’s Sevens tournament.

The overall winner of the two tournaments will qualify for the 2025 World Challenger Series.
