At a time when the executive arm of the government has been accused of interfering with the legislature and the Judiciary, the Law Society of Kenya has vowed to stand firm.

A new team of lawyers on Friday night took over the helm of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) led by the new President Faith Odhiambo and her vice Maura Kabata.

The duo alongside other council members were sworn in during the LSK 2024 Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the Rift Valley Sports Club in Nakuru City.

Speaking after her inauguration, Odhiambo and her team vowed to keep the government in check and especially the executive arm even as they drummed for independence.

Over taxation

“There are a lot of challenges happening in our health and education sectors. Kenyans are suffering from over taxation. As LSK, we must speak out on these,” said Odhiambo.

Her sentiments came days after President William Ruto alleged that he had made a deal with the Judiciary on the Housing Act, claims which Chief Justice Martha Koome has already refuted.

The executive has also in the past trained its guns on the Judiciary accusing it of being sub judicial on matters relating to the executive.

“The Judiciary must remain independent. There are matters which as LSK we shall take the lead in relooking into,” said Ochiambo in reference to recently passed laws.

She took a swipe at Parliament saying that though the legislators were elected on the same platform as the executive head, they must take objective stand on public matters.

“The Parliament must realise that they too should be an independent arm of the government. They should not just sing and dance to the tunes of the executive,” said Odhiambo.

Odhiambo who is the second female LSK President further noted that they will push for an audit of the Ardhi Sasa platform saying that it has been abused.
