Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has threatened to expose senior government officials who served in the previous administration of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta for alleged theft of public resources.
Speaking during a Sunday service at Jesus Winner Ministry in Roysambu, Nairobi, the country’s second in command claimed that more than Ksh24 billion of public money was looted in the last three months of Uhuru’s administration.
He said former Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries were responsible for the looting and threatened to name them in the coming days.
“In the next few days, I will be releasing details of billions of shillings looted from the public coffers in the last three months of Uhuru’s administration. I will announce the ministers and PSs responsible so that Kenyana can know,” Gachagua said.
He said the senior government officials went on a looting spree after realizing that Uhuru’s preferred successor Raila Odinga stood no chance against then-Kenya Kwanza presidential candidate William Ruto.
“Pesa ya Kenya yote sa ile waliona uchaguzi imeharibika walibeba na magunia (When they realised that they were going to lose, they looted all the money and carried it in sacks),” Gachagua claimed.
The former Mathira Member of Parliament alleged that Raila was forced to challenge Ruto’s victory at the Supreme Court to give the officials sufficient time to steal and hide their loot.
“Between the time IEBC (Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission) announced William Ruto as President-elect and the time he was sworn in they looted more than 24 billion,” Gachagua claimed.
According to the deputy president, the money was being ferried to Wilson Airport in sacks and flown in choppers to people’s homes.
Gachagua has severally claimed that Uhuru’s administration left a country with a bloated economy, insisting that the former administration was responsible for the current high cost of living.
“The truth of the matter is that we have inherited a dilapidated economy that is almost facing an economic shutdown, we have 10 billion public debt, six million Kenyans have no employment we have a demoralized public service,” he said in September after the inauguration of the Kenya Kwanza administration.
