The Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) secretary general Francis Atwoli has been elected chairman and spokesman of the Africa Workers Group.

The outspoken Atwoli was unanimously elected during the official opening of the 14th International Labour Organisation (ILO) African region at a meeting at Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

The President of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) Brussels Ayubba described Atwoli as a distinguished labour leader who has exhibited commitment and dedication.

“He has demonstrated passion to the ideals of the working men and women and whose fight for social justice remains unmatched,” he added.

In his acceptance speech, Atwoli said he was humbled by the confidence that the entire leadership of workers on the continent had shown in electing him.

“I remain committed to fighting for social justice for working men and women on the continent and beyond,” he said.
