Former Kieni Member of Parliament (MP) Kanini Kega is seeking a comeback in politics as he launched his bid for the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) post.

Kega announced he was eying the EALA seat through a post on social media on November 2, 2022.

He is seeking Jubilee Party’s nomination to serve in EALA.

“After intense consultations and deep soul searching I have decided to offer myself for Nomination through Jubilee/Azimio Party for the EALA MP position. I believe I have the requisite qualifications and experience to represent our great Nation in the East Africa Leg. Assembly,” Kanini Kega tweeted.

EALA

The EALA is the independent, legislative arm of the East African Community and is based in Arusha, Tanzania.

EALA has 62 members, of which each member state submits 9 elected members, and 8 ex-officio members.

According to Article 50 of the East African Community Treaty, members are elected by their respective country’s national legislature. Article 50 also calls upon said members to reflect their country’s political parties, opinions, gender composition, and other special groups.

The ex-officio members of the Assembly are to be each member state’s minister for regional cooperation, the Secretary General of the East African Community, and the Counsel to the Community.

The deadline for EALA applications to Parliament expires today November 2, 2022, ahead of nominations next week.

A parliamentary committee has already been set up to receive the EALA applications, interview applicants and table a report on successful nominees.

The House will then vote to approve or reject the report.

Kenya is the only member state yet to pick its representatives to EALA.

Kega’s loss

The former Kieni MP was yanked into political oblivion following his loss in the August 9, 2022, General Election.

Kega, who has served for two terms, was among the allies of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta who were swept aside by the strong United Democratic Alliance (UDA) wave in the Mt Kenya region.

He is now seeking a soft landing in EALA.
