Wiyeta Girls storms into East Africa school games
Wiyeta Girls secured their spot in the East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association games yesterday after thrashing Itigo Girls 6-0 in an electric match at Nakuru High School.
Wiyeta got themselves in front after a defensive blunder by Itigo Girls in the 12th minute which saw Lavenda Akinyi score the first goal of the match before doubling the lead three minutes later.
Shirleen Opisa got herself on the score sheet minutes before halftime with a sublime finish after a scintillating move by the Rift Valley champions.
In the second half, Lavenda Akinyi scored a brace before setting up a simple tap-in for Edna Wanda in the dying minutes of the match to condemn Itigo to their worst defeat in the tournament.
Wiyeta will now face Dagoretti Girls High School in today’s finals, a match to determine the national champions as both teams have qualified for the East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association games in Arusha.
Dagoretti narrowly beat Mwira Girls 1-0 in an end-to-end match that saw Mwira hit the crossbar late in the game to set up a tense ending to the match.
Peninah Auko was the sole scorer in the match to condemn Mwira to their second defeat in the tournament and set up a thrilling clash today.
Huge margin
Wiyeta Girls Head coach Edgar Manyara who was elated with the performance said they are happy to once again represent the country in the EASSA games for the 10th time.
He explained that despite winning with a huge margin, the match was tough as they had to dig out to get the result stating that the team has been working tirelessly for the semis.
“We have won the EASSA games five times. The last time we won was in 2018 at Gulu in Uganda and we are now aiming to win it for Kenya for the sixth time,” said Manyara.
According to Manyara, they have no time to rest as they have to prepare for today’s finals saying he expects to lift the national title.
In the Boys Category, Ebwali Secondary School produced a sterling second-half display to condemn Kabarnet High to a 1-0 defeat at the National Secondary School games semi-finals.
After a barren first half, Ebwali broke the deadlock through Alex Tindi who capitalized on a rebound by the keeper who parried Calvin Otieno’s initial shot on goal.
Ebwali sustained a series of attacking pressure at the Kabarnet box forcing Brighton Jenyeka into making brilliant saves to keep his team in the game.
In the dying minutes of the match, Kabarnet sought to force a draw to keep their hopes of qualifying through to the East Africa Secondary School games through Austin Wekesa who saw his shot fly wide of the post.
