Why Mashemeji Derby is a special career moment for Leopards winger James Kinyanjui
AFC Leopards winger James Kinyanjui has described the 98th Mashemeji Derby, pitting arch rivals Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, a mouthwatering Football Kenya Federation Premier League fixture on Sunday, December 7, 2025, as a defining career moment.
K’Ogalo will host Ingwe in a fierce clash at the Nyayo National Stadium, with bragging rights at stake. However, the encounter will not just be any other fixture for the former KCB FC winger.
Defining moment
Speaking ahead of the cracker on Thursday, December 4, 2025, Kinyanjui expressed delight and optimism, saying he has never experienced the electric atmosphere that comes with the biggest fixture in Kenyan football.
So far, Kinyanjui has delivered four assists for AFC Leopards. In the process, the winger has also scored one goal, against Mathare United, in the Sportpesa League.
“It will be a big step in my career, it has never happened in my entire footballing career, it will be my first time playing in the derby, I feel proud, and I’m waiting for the moment,” Kinyanjui said.

Under Fred Ambani, AFC Leopards have yet to lose a Mashemeji Derby. Ingwe will be heading into Sunday’s fixture after recording a 1-1 draw with Kariobangi Sharks, while Gor Mahia will be keen to bounce back after suffering a 4-1 beating at the hands of APS Bomet at Nyayo Stadium.
“There is no pressure; the players are prepared and ready for the match. We are going to win against Gor Mahia, I have that feeling and belief that we are capable.” He added.
Mashemeji double header
Meanwhile, history is on the horizon as Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards face off on Sunday, December 7, 2025, in a double-header at the Nyayo National Stadium.
For the first time in the Mashemeji Derby history, the main event pitting the men’s sides will be preceded by the match involving the ladies’ teams, AFC Leopardess and Gor Mahia Queens.
Confirming the new development, Gor Mahia vice chairperson Sally Bolo said on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, via her social media pages, urging Gor Mahia supporters to turn up in their numbers at Nyayo Stadium and rally behind both the men’s and ladies’ teams.
”Ladies and gentlemen, this Sunday, 7th December, Nyayo Stadium becomes the home of passion, pride and pure football energy as the Mashemeji Derby Double Header rolls in. We kick off with the queens of the game, Gor Mahia Queens vs AFC Leopardess, at 12:00 PM. If you think the men bring fire, just wait until you see the ladies deliver premium football and premium heartbreak,” her statement read in part.
