What will Wanyonyi pocket after London 800m Diamond League triumph?
Kenya’s 800m sensation Emmanuel Wanyonyi will pocket $10,000 (KSh 1.3 million) after his triumphant run during the London Diamond League series.
Wanyonyi was not among the four selected Diamond + Disciplines at the London meet categories that award increased prize money of $20,000 (Ksh 2.5 million); thus, he is set to earn $10,000 (Ksh1.3 million), the standard prize for regular Diamond League event winners.
The 800m women, pole vault women, 100m men, and 1500m men were the selected premium events at the meet. However, Phanuel Koech, who won the men’s 1500m, pocketed the higher Diamond + purse of Ksh2.5 million.
How Wanyonyi conquered London
He stormed to a commanding victory in the men’s 800m final with a meeting record of 1:42.00.
Wanyonyi, 20, left no doubt about his elite status on the global stage, outpacing a strong field that included Canada’s Marco Arop and Great Britain’s Max Burgin.
The Kapsabet-based runner made a tactical surge with 400m to go, resisting pressure from Arop, who momentarily edged ahead at the 300m mark.
But Wanyonyi, running with poise and power, switched gears to reclaim the lead and cross the line first in what is now the third-fastest time in the world this year, all belonging to him.
