Wetang’ula hails Kasarani Stadium as symbol of sporting excellence after hosting CHAN final

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has praised Kasarani International Stadium as a symbol of sporting excellence following its hosting of the CHAN 2024 final, describing the venue as Africa’s premier stage for continental football competition.

In a statement posted on his X account on Saturday, August 30, 2025, Wetang’ula celebrated both the quality of the final match and the stadium’s role in showcasing African football at its finest.

“History made at Kasarani International Stadium as Morocco clinched a thrilling 3-2 victory over Madagascar to lift their third CHAN title,” Wetang’ula declared.

The National Assembly Speaker elevated Kasarani Stadium’s status beyond its role as a Kenyan venue, describing it as a continental symbol of unity.

“Kasarani once again shines as Africa’s stage of unity, passion, and sporting excellence,” Wetang’ula proclaimed.

Thrilling final showcased

The Speaker commended the competitive nature of the final, noting how Madagascar pushed the eventual champions to their limits in what proved to be an entertaining spectacle for the continental audience.

“It was a contest of grit and spirit, with Madagascar pushing the champions to the very edge,” Wetang’ula observed.

Wetang’ula acknowledged Morocco’s achievement in securing its third CHAN title, reinforcing the North African nation’s status as a dominant force in continental football.

“Morocco’s experience and composure carried the day, cementing their place as a continental powerhouse,” the Speaker noted.

Morocco’s victory

The CHAN final played on Saturday itself provided drama befitting the tournament’s stature, with Morocco emerging as champions after a closely contested match against Madagascar.

Madagascar, competing in their first-ever CHAN final, stunned fans by taking an early lead with a goal from Félicité Mantasoa.

Morocco quickly regained momentum with Youssef Mehri equalising in the 27th minute, and just before half-time, Oussama Lamlaoui scored to put the Atlas Lions ahead 2-1, much to the crowd’s delight.

Madagascar refused to give up. In the 68th minute, Toky Rakotondraibe restored parity, making it 2-2 and keeping alive hopes for an unforgettable upset.

The decisive moment came late in the second half when Morocco’s Oussama Lamlilioui scored again, sealing a 3-2 victory.
