Wazalendo Hockey Club thrust faith in the young

Wazalendo Hockey Club coach Fidelis Kimanzi is confident new signings will add the much-needed depth as the club gears up for a return to Africa Cup for Clubs Championship after many years on the sidelines.
Kimanzi’s team qualified for the annual event scheduled for November 30 to December 5 in Blantyre, Malawi, after finishing second behind champions Butali Sugar Warriors during the 2019 men’s Kenya Hockey Union Premier League.
He says despite his side last playing in the prestigious club competition in 2007, he is confident they will give a good account of themselves.
The top two teams from each gender earn automatic tickets to the event.
Kimanzi who lost his captain Kenneth Munialo to Butali brought in midfielder Clifford Omare from University of Eldoret, goalkeeper Tony Kitheka and defender Dan Obonyo both from Multi-Media University, and midfielder Boniface Dombi from Parklands.
“I have faith in the young players we have brought on board. They have shown the desire to learn and improve.
The only challenge is that we have not been able to really train as a team since the government banned social gatherings to combat the spread of Covid-19 pandemic.
We have been forced to have our players train in small groups of four to six in their respective localities with close supervision by their attached coaches,” said Kimanzi.
Meanwhile, Wazalendo chairman Douglas Ochong says a funds-drive launched recently through M-Changa platform to raise cash towards the club’s trip to Malawi is picking momentum.
