Vihiga Queens opponents confirmed ahead of Champions League qualifiers

FKF Women’s Premier League champions, Vihiga Queens, are gearing up for the upcoming 2023 CAF Women Champions League CECAFA qualifiers.

The draw for the qualifiers, conducted by CAF in Cairo, Egypt, placed Vihiga Queens in Pool B alongside JKT Queens from Tanzania, AS Kigali Women from Rwanda, and New Generation FC from Zanzibar.

Vihiga Queens possible opponents

In Pool A, Uganda’s Kampala Queens will face tough competition from C.B.E FC (Ethiopia), F.A.D FC (Djibouti), Buja Queens (Burundi), and Yei Joints FC (South Sudan). Winners from Pool A will face those in Pool B during the semis.

The qualifiers are scheduled to take place in Uganda from August 12-24 2023.

Vihiga Queens secured their place in the qualifiers after winning the FKF Women’s Premier League with an impressive performance.

They accumulated 55 points from 18 matches, registering only one draw and suffering three losses. The team scored 53 goals while conceding just 12.

This will be Vihiga Queens’ second appearance in the CAF Women Champions League, following their successful campaign in the 2021 edition held at the MISC Kasarani.

In that tournament, Vihiga Queens finished second in their pool after defeating Yei Join Stars 11-0 and New Generation FC 8-0, but succumbed to a 4-2 loss against CFE.

They advanced to the semifinals, where they secured a 2-1 victory over Simba Queens before defeating CFE with the same scoreline to secure their qualification for the Champions League.

With their eyes set on a second appearance in the prestigious tournament, Vihiga Queens will be looking to make a mark in the qualifiers and secure their spot in the upcoming CAF Women Champions League.

The 2023 edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League is set to be held in Ivory Coast, and the winner of this edition will automatically qualify for the next edition of the tournament.

AS FAR currently holds the title as the defending champions after claiming victory in the 2022 edition of the tournament.

Pool A:  Kampala Queens (Uganda), C.B.E FC (Ethiopia), F.A.D FC (Djibouti), Buja Queens (Burundi), and Yei Joints FC (South Sudan)

Pool B: Vihiga Queens (Kenya), JKT Queens (Tanzania), AS Kigali (Rwanda), New Generation FC (Zanzibar).
