Twinkle Hockey Club has taken the Kenya Hockey Women’s Premier League by storm, setting records both on and off the pitch in their first season playing at the top of the country’s game.

The team, majorly comprising young girls aged between 17 and 25 years, is giving hockey big guns in the country a run for their money, barely two and a half years since its establishment.

Speaking to People Sport on Friday, July 25, 2025, the club’s President Desmond Boi confirmed that it is the top-level professionalism and understanding of the game adopted by the outfit in the selection and recruitment of players that has contributed to the rapid rise of Twinkle Hockey Club.

Promoted to the Premier League from the Super League this season, the team, under the guidance of former Kenyan international Hellen Chemtai, seeks to retain its current top-tier status and compete for top prizes among the bigwigs after its establishment in 2022.

Boi said the team draws its membership from secondary schools and colleges across the country. The recruitment drive conducted by hockey experts usually takes place between the months of January and February annually during the league recess.

”Twinkle Hockey Club is a team that gives young girls from senior secondary schools, colleges, and universities a chance to play professional hockey. Our coaching staff does recruitment drives every year to bring on board prospective talents through rigorous trials and tests for three weeks. We are a young club, though making very remarkable progress,” Boi said.

Premier league journey

In their first attempt playing in the Kenya Hockey Women’s Super league, the team managed a podium finish after being ranked third in the standings, having been formed a few months earlier in 2022. The team finished second in their second NSL season before sealing their historic promotion to the Premier League thereafter.

‘The first leg of the Premier League season is over, and we are impressed, given that it is our debut season. The girls are pumped up ahead of the second leg of the campaign,’ Boi said.

Twinkle Hockey Club will start its second leg of the current season with an assignment against USIU Ladies on August 3, 2025. Away from the pitch, the team also participates in community engagement programs such as cancer awareness.
