Former Mathare United goalkeeper Alex Mwangi (pictured) has maintained that the club will not be relegated this season despite its on-field challenges.

“I have always loved Mathare. That’s where my talent was developed. I see them struggling especially last season, but we will pick up. We still have many games to compete in,” said Mwangi who also added that it is high time the club invested heavily in its alumni.

The Slum Boys won their second match of the season on Wednesday courtesy of a solitary 86th-minute Daniel Otieno’s goal against the visiting Vihiga Bullets in Nairobi.

It was less than a week after head coach Boniface Omondi quit and the club was quick to issue a statement also stating that goalkeeper and trainer Samuel Koko was to take over as head coach.

On Tuesday last week, the club issued another disturbing statement that pointed out the suspension of skipper Alphonse Ndonye and back liner Lennox Oguttu, who are accused of fixing matches hence their poor start of the Premier League campaign.

Mathare United have accrued only seven points from the 12 games they have played so far and currently lie second last on the 18-team top-tier league table.
