FKF Premier League champions Gor Mahia can now breathe a sigh of relief after the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) overturned sanctions imposed on the club by the federation.

Following the crowd trouble that ensued during their league fixture against promoted side Murang’a Seal, which ended in a 1-1 draw at Kasarani Stadium on November 11, the FKF disciplinary committee moved to hand K’Ogalo several sanctions. Among them was to play their next five top-flight matches in empty stadia and a fine of Sh500,000.

However, in a ruling obtained by People Sport, the SDT overruled the charges leveled against the team pending the hearing and determination of the application filed by Gor Mahia challenging the decision.

“It’s hereby ordered: That the 1st (FKF) and 2nd (Sports Kenya) respondents be and are hereby restrained from imposing the sanctions contained in the 2nd respondents letter dated 16th November 2023 pending the hearing and determination of the application,” read part of the ruling from SDT.

“The 2nd and 3rd respondent shall have seven (7) days after service upon them of the application to file their respective Responses. The matter shall be listed for mention for further directions on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at 2:30pm via Microsoft Teams.”

Besides the team-level penalties, the club’s top players namely – Benson Omalla, Rodgers Ouma, Rooney Onyango, and Joshua Onyango – were summoned to appear before the disciplinary committee for their conduct during the aforementioned fixture with FKF stating their actions had been deemed inappropriate and deserved disciplinary action.

With their fans vandalising Kasarani Stadium, Sports Kenya also reined inthe club via a fine the club Sh1.9 million and further banned them from using the venue for their matches.

The decision by SDT means Gor Mahia will now be able to collect revenues as their fans will be allowed to watch their next league fixture against Nzoia Sugar this Saturday.
