Gachagua’s impeachment process

Eyes will be on the Senators as the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is in their hands now.

They will hear and determine Gachagua’s fate in plenary, and the hearing is set to begin on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

“Consequently, pursuant to Standing Order 78 (9) and Rule 3 of Part 1 of the Second Schedule to the Senate Standing Orders, I appoint Wednesday, October 16, 2024, as the date for the commencement of the hearing. The hearing shall be held in the Senate Chamber, Parliament Buildings, Nairobi, and shall commence at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, and run up to the conclusion of the hearing on Thursday, October 17, 2024,” a notice by Senate Speaker Amason Kingi read.

The senate battle is expected to be as hot as what was witnessed at the National Assembly.

The composition of the chamber, as per the outcome of the 2022 general elections, is as follows: 34 are affiliated with the Kenya Kwanza Alliance, 32 are allied with the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Alliance, and Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah was elected on the National Reconstruction Alliance (NRA) ticket. The former ruling party, Jubilee, has five senators.

Political analysts and the citizens will be keen to see whether the party or coalition alliances will affect the voting pattern come the D-Day for Gachagua, who is also a Kenya Kwanza honcho.

This fixture is a crucial one for the two countries given that both have four points, and the nation that collects the maximum points would have taken a giant step towards qualifying for the next year’s showpiece.

Several other qualifiers will also take place today and on Saturday.
