Ten teams to clash in Wakili Sigei football tournament set for Bomet East
By Emmanuel Rono, July 3, 2025Ten teams from Bomet East Sub-county are expected to compete in this weekend’s edition of the Wakili Sigei Cup, which will be staged at Tegat and Merigi playgrounds.
According to Jim Hussein, the tournament coordinator, two teams have been chosen from each of the five wards: Longisa, Kipreres, Kembu, Chemaner, and Merigi to compete in the two-day football competition.
He emphasised the value of self-control and sportsmanship, exhorting competitors to enter the competition with honesty and seriousness.
“The players from this region are expected to take the tournament seriously and use it as a platform to showcase their talents because this is an opportunity for them to grow, not just in sports but also in character,” Hussein said while addressing the press in Bomet Green Stadium.
The finals are scheduled to take place at Tegat playground on Sunday, with the event expected to be graced by Bomet Senator Hillary Sigei, who doubles as be tournament’s sponsor.
Hussein revealed that the tournament winners will walk away with Ksh35,000, while the runners-up will receive Ksh30,000. The third and fourth-placed teams will take home Ksh20,000 and Ksh15,000 respectively.
Following the Bomet East competition, the tournament will spread to other Bomet sub-counties, such as Bomet Central, Konoin, Sotik, and Chepalungu.
Over 500 teams from all five sub-counties are participating in this year’s expanded competition. Senator Sigei reiterated his commitment to nurturing talent across the county.
“My mission is to position Bomet among the counties that boast excellent sporting talent. By doing so, we will empower our sportsmen and inspire future generations,” Senator Sigei said.
He further noted that talent scouts will be present during matches to identify and offer opportunities to promising players to join elite clubs.
Beyond competition, the Wakili Sigei Cup is an essential venue for spotting and nurturing local talent, supporting Bomet County’s larger sports development goal.
The team coordinator further stated that all the required arrangements are in place and that the tournament is anticipated to be more competitive this year than it was last year.
“We expect a stiff competition this year, with all preparations finished to ensure the tournament exceeds expectations,” Hussein stated.
