Struggles, triumphs that shaped FKF-PL 2023/24 season

By , December 22, 2023

The 2023-24 Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League had its share of highs and lows as “big signings” failed to shine for their respective clubs in the initial half of the season.

Kicking off after Kenya served a six-month indefinite ban from FIFA due to alleged government interference, the season started alongside the transfer window, allowing clubs to bolster their squads for forthcoming action.

Among the significant transfers, Gor Mahia delved into the market to bring back their former player Lawrence Juma, returning from a stint in Rwanda with Sofapaka the previous season.

Meanwhile, Tusker, under coach Robert Matano, secured the services of former FKF MVP and Golden Boot winner Erik Kapaito. Kapaito, who had a brief spell in Ethiopia and Zambia with Super League outfit Zanaco, struggled to regain his scoring form for the Brewers. He managed to score his first goal after 13 matches, finding the net against Bidco United in a 3-2 victory on December 13, and later against Nzoia Sugar in a 2-0 away win in Sudi four days later.

AFC Leopards also opted for experienced players, including Clifton Miheso and Kevin Kimani, but despite the reinforcements, they are grappling in the top flight, striving to steer clear of the relegation zone.

Sofapaka, spending significantly in the window, brought in Burundian coach Francis Haringingo and former striker Fiston Abdul Razak. However, their start was rocky, losing their initial six matches, prompting Haringingo’s dismissal and the appointment of Ezekiel Akwana on an interim basis.

The return of Shabana to the league after 17 years in the shadows marked a highlight. They clinched the National Super League (NSL) with two matches to spare, securing direct promotion alongside Murang’a Seal FC.

Despite their comeback, the Kisii-based Glamour Boys have struggled, currently fighting to move beyond the relegation zone.
