Sports scribes call for free and fair polls, launch ‘Nguvu mpya’ team
Local athletics enthusiasts are in for a treat as athletes are expected to converge in Nairobi for the second Athletics Kenya (AK) track and field weekend meet at the Nyayo Stadium on Friday and Sunday.
During the two days action, participants will have a chance of improve on their ranking and have their records ratified by World Athletics (WA).
The local association has enlisted the meet as a World Athletics Competition Ranking and part of WA calendar. The athletes have set their eyes on track and field ahead of the World championships in Budapest, Hungary later this year.
Last week speaking to People Sport, AK vice president Paul Mutwii who is also in charge of competitions, said they will use the event to select a team of sprinters to represent the country in Botswana and America as part of their preparation ahead of world championships, but he said all the plans will depend on the funds availability.
“We will be selecting a team of sprinters from the second meet to go and compete in Botswana and America, we have already applied for funding from the ministry of sports,” said Mutwii .
However, the track and field competition will also double up as national trials for the under 18 and under 20 for East Africa Regional Championships set for March 10-11 in Dar-es Salaam , Tanzania.
Meanwhile 400m champion youngster Nyachoka Machoka said she was confident of making it to the national under 18 team for the global showpiece.
She said she is currently training hard in preparation for the upcoming local events as she eyes good results.
“ I trust my training, I’m working extra hard in my preparation ahead of the trials for the under 18 and under 20 events, I really want to be in team Kenya,” said Machoka.
The Form Three student at St Peter’s Keberesi, Machoka will be looking up to commonwealth games gold medalist Mary Moraa whom she describes as her role model and she intends go a notch higher by breaking her record in future.
“Moraa is my role model and when she goes out of competition I want to break her 400m record in Kisii county,” said Machoka who won the 400m race in Kisumu during the first AK track and field competition meet a fort night ago.
Machoka recalls how she missed joining a team of sprinters from Kenya to Poland for relays due to an arm-string injury last year.
“Last year I missed being part of the national team to Poland for relays because of an injury, but this year I am in good shape and ready to conquer the world,” added Machoka.
