Sofapaka finally ended their three-game losing streak in assertive fashion by dispatching giant-killers Mathare United 1-0 in an exciting Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League match at Kasarani yesterday.

The goal that made all the difference came through second half substitute Alen Imbusia in the 53rd minute moments after the victors had spurned several scoring chances.

Sofapaka coach David Ouma opted to rest the likes of Stanely Omondi, Evans Maliachi and Jacob Onyango but still got the results he wanted against a Mathare side that posted a shock 2-1 win over multiple champions Gor Mahia a week ago

Before the match, Batoto Ba Mungu had seemingly been groping in the dark after losing three straight fixtures against Kariobangi Sharks (2-0), Bidco United (2-0) and KCB (1-0) before finding their footing against a gritty Mathare side.

But this time round, the frontline of Rodgers Okoth, Stephen Okola and Sebastian Ikhekhai shone like a polished diamond while the rear weaved around Nixon Omondi, David Nshirimana and Baron Oketch did well not to expose goalkeeper Simon Masaka to forays by Mathare’s attackers.

Ouma was elated by the final outcome although he was quick to warn his charges against complacency.

“We have a young team that is hungry for success and is still work in progress. Its strength lies in teamwork and if it can continue playing like that we may find ourselves joining the bandwagon of team that will be contending for the title. There is no time to rest,” offered Ouma. Elsewhere at Sudi Stadium, Nzoia called it late to hold their closest challengers in top placed Gor Mahia to a 2-2 draw.

Austin Odhiambo shot Gor ahead in the third minute before Ian Karani equalized for Nzoia.

Benson Omala would then sink in a penalty for Gor to regain the lead in the 61st minute before James Kibande pulled the game from the fire for the hosts also through a a spot kick eight minute to the end.

Meanwhile, its pay-back time as AFC Leopards engage Wazito in the only midweek fixture today and which is penciled for Kasarani main stadium.

Placed sixth in the chart, Ingwe are expected to be a vengeful lot after losing 2-1 to Wazito in the first leg encounter in Muhoroni on January 14 and nothing short of a win shall appease their fans.

Leopards are currently enjoying a purple patch in the season as they have not lost in their last nine matches with deputy coach Tom “Gaza” Juma expressing confidence that the team will continue holding onto its own in its quest to catch up with the leading pack.

“So far so good and I must say we are hopeful of continuing with the push to the top. WE shall take each match at a time and see what happens from there,” said Juma.
