Shabana FC are the National Super League champions for the 2022–23 season following a 2-0 victory over Kisumu All-Stars at Gusii Stadium on Saturday, July 8, 2023.

The Kisii-based side finally weathered the storm from Murang’a Seal to emerge as the champions of the Second Division.

Onchiri is the star

Two goals from Nehemiah Onchiri ensured that Shabana won their last match of the season and, ultimately, crowned their Premier League promotion with the title.

With four matches to go, Shabana had already confirmed their place in the top flight, and their season’s arch-rivals, Muranga’ Seal, will also participate in the Premier League given that they took the other automatic promotion slot.

Tore Bobe could have been crowned champions in the penultimate match but were beaten by Murang’a Seal at St. Sebastian Part. The 2-1 loss meant they had to win or pick up a point from the game against the Kisumu All-Stars in order to become champions.

Significant win

Meanwhile, Kisumu All-Stars were able to hold the NSL heavyweights to a goalless draw in the first half but conceded in the second half to give Shabana an advantage in the title race.

Onchiri, who has been a key figure in the Shabana team, scored the opening goal in the 54th minute and the second one in the 82nd minute.

The win was the 23rd one for Tore Bobe, who have been impressive throughout the season. The eyes will now be on Shabana to see whether they will replicate their top form once again in the Premier League.

They return to the top tier after playing in the lower divisions for the last 17 years.
