Saab 96, iconic rides set to dazzle Nairobi Racecourse
By Lucky Oluoch, August 14, 2024The 2024 Africa Concours d’Elegance is poised to showcase a rare array of classic vehicles from September 29, marking a special celebration of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club’s anniversary at Nairobi Racecourse.
Among the standout entrants is Thomas Frowein with his Saab 96, making its first appearance in many years at the event.
Saab 96 is known for its rugged reliability.
Similarly, the Saab 96 was famously driven by Erik Carlsson in rallies like the RAC and Monte Carlo, and has long been a favorite in Kenya.
The Concours will also feature Jane Chemngorem’s 1962 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, alongside her husband Paul’s Subaru Leone coupe and 1956 Volkswagen Beetle.
Vitafoam Products Limited will present a 1966 MGB Roadster and a 1974 Austin Mini, adding to the diversity of the competition.
Notable entries include Mohamed Aslam Khan’s 1977 Porsche 911 and the Ford Escorts of Mohamed Shakeel Khan and Farhaaz Khan from 1968 and 1975.
A significant number of Mercedes-Benz models will be present, including Patrick Mweheire’s 1959 W180 and 1969 230S Fintail.
Motorcycle enthusiasts will see Dominique Antoine, renowned for his multiple wins, now competing with a BSA bike and a 1959 Peugeot 203 in the car category.
Tumaini Muthiga, a perennial Concours favorite, has entered four classic cars and two motorcycles, known for his meticulous preparation and costume coordination.
Judging will focus on the thorough preparation of each vehicle, with inspections conducted on the TotalEnergies ramp and detailed evaluations of paintwork, interior, and roadworthiness by experienced officials before the cars return to their paddocks.
