The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has handed former Kenya Simbas head coach Paul Odera the reins as Director of Rugby, tasking him with spearheading the development and performance of the sport nationwide.

Odera, who officially took over on February 1, 2025, brings a wealth of experience, having previously led Kenya U20 (Chipu) to the 2019 World Rugby Under-20 trophy and guided the Simbas to key international milestones.

After his appointment, he outlined his vision based on three key pillars inspired by Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai: Transformational leadership, science and data-driven decision-making and developing a Kenyan rugby identity built on strong fundamentals.

“I look forward to achieving the three-legged African stool,” he said.

KRU chairman Sasha Mutai hailed Odera’s vast experience, stating that his leadership, both as a former player and coach, makes him a perfect fit for the role.

“Paul Odera has done it all in Kenya Rugby, from playing and captaining to coaching at the age-grade level and with the Simbas.

He will be a key member in executing the KRU Strategic Plan 2024-2028 and steering Kenyan rugby to new heights,” Mutai said.

Similarly, KRU CEO Thomas Odundo welcomed the appointment, emphasising Odera’s value to the federation.

“Paul brings immense knowledge and experience to the Secretariat. His background as a school teacher will be particularly useful in our development programs and pathway structures. We will offer him the necessary support to thrive in his new role,” Odundo stated.
