Rivalry renewal at Embu Sevens
The race to perfect sevens systems after a two-year absence spelt by the Corona Virus pandemic is on this weekend. A total of 15 teams from the different levels of Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) leagues including seven Kenya Cup teams will headline the rivalry renewal mission in the four pools at the Njukiri stadium in Embu.
The event according to Embu RFC chairman Moses Mukabane will be a fired edition that has inclusive plans for general entertainment befitting adults and children.
“ We have 16 confirmed teams, seven are from the Kenya Cup league. We are looking forward to a fired day one where the four pools will give the fans some quality entertainment on the field as other activities will be lined up to keep the place as lively as possible,” Mukabane said.
Defending champions Menengai Oilers are joined by recently promoted Kenya Cup side Catholic Monks hosts Embu RFC and Rongai Morans to make up pool A. Last edition’s runners up Nakuru will headline pool B where two-time winners Mean Machine, Administration Police and Meru University complete the second pool.
Pool C features Nondescripts to be joined by Blak Blad, British Army Training Unit in Kenya (BATUK) and an upcoming team from Kabete- the Stallions RFC. The final pool will be headlined by the university student trio of MMUST, Strathmore Leos, USIU and Meru RFC.
Fans will be treated to various derby thrillers which include: the Nakuru derby pitting Oilers and Nakuru RFC, the local derby between Embu and Meru, and the varsity derby pitting Mean Machine, Blak Blad, Strathmore and MMUST.
The ultimate action will be when Kenya’s Administration Police meet the British Army on the second day.
A conversion gave Oilers the title in the previous edition and thanks to a 14-12 win over Nakuru.
The current Kenya Cup runners up head coach Gibson Weru is excited by the return of the sevens action as he looks forward to tough competition.
“We are very much focused on the forthcoming sevens circuit and for the start, we need to perform well this weekend as the defending champions,” coach Weru said.
