The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Mozzart Bet Cup round of sixteen matches yesterday went according to script when four teams including Tusker, Kariobangi Sharks, Sofapaka and Ulinzi Stars stormed into the quarter finals.

However, the shocker came in the form of cup holders Gor Mahia being booted out of the competition after losing 1-0 to Kakamega Homeboyz at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.

At Nyayo National Stadium, Sharks came up with the message that they are indeed intent on representing Kenya in the CAF Confederation Cup after edging out Division One side Equity FC by a solitary goal.

Although it was a game of fluctuating fortunes, it was Sharks who took the early lead in the 10th minute when Paul Odhiambo raced on to an inviting cross from Geoffrey Onyango to score with a glancing header.

Sensing danger, Equity introduced Oscar Lusomo for David Onyango but they still found Sharks defence line impenetrable. Sharks Coach William Muluya also made changes bringing on Fortune Omoto, Moses Shikanda and Julius Masaba to replace Signum Maina, Shariff Musa and Geoffrey Onyango.

The interchange almost bore fruit as Odhiambo, who was later substituted for Matthews Kibiwott, almost breached Equity’ defense of Ezekiel Okeno, David Onyango and Laurent Aka after weaving his way from the wing.

Few minutes later, Sharks’ Keith Imbali, who was a thorn in the deference of Equity all afternoon, was unlucky not to put the ball at the back of the net after disentangling himself from his marker after he was put through by Patrick Ngunyi.

But it was not Sharks all through as Equity carved chances of their own mainly through Bonaventure Atse and Joshua Oyoo both who were denied by goalkeeper Kevin Ouru. In Kakamega, Gor had a shock of their lives when they were edged 1-0 by Kakamega Homeboyz with Harambee Stars call-up Moses Mudavadi scoring the all-important goal in the 57th minute.

A short 56th free-kick from Collins Odhiambo fell in the path of Mudavadi who unleashed a strong looping right footed shot that seemed to deflect off Kogalo new signing Emery Bayisenge to fly past Matthews thus sending Homeboyz fans into raptures.

Interestingly, it was Gor who started on the right footing when the league’s top scorer Benson Omala sneaked into Abana Abeingo’s danger zone in the 7th minute as his shot ricocheted off the post with goalkeeper Farouk Shikhalo out of position.

In the half hour mark, Homeboyz striker, Enock Agwanda, playing against his former employers, was seconds late to slot in past Gor custodian Gad Matthews
