It was a disappointing start to the 2021/22 Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) men’s league post-season for Kenya Prisons as they went down 3-1 to defending champions General Service Unit (GSU) on Friday at the Nyayo National Stadium indoor court.

Looking to end GSU’s recent dominance and win a first league crown since 2016, Prisons fought bravely but could not overcome a resolute GSU side as they fell 25:20, 19:25, 25:19, 28:26.

Kipkosgei injury

And to add salt to injury, David Lung’aho’s charges will now have to be without the services of Jairus Kipkosgei for the remainder of the playoffs after the middle blocker twisted his ankle while going up for a block late in the third set.

GSU’s win takes them to the top of the log with three points but despite the win, Gideon Tarus’ men will be disappointed by how they allowed Prisons to steal a set which at the end of it all maybe what decides the championship.

Speaking after the game, Prisons’ head coach Lung’aho kept faith that despite the early setback, his charges were still in with a chance to be champions.

League format

He said, “Not the best start at all for us but as you know this is a league format and we all have to play each other. You never know what might happen between now and Sunday. We are still very much in the race.”

Up next for Prisons will be another mouthwatering tie against Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) on Saturday at the same venue from 2pm while GSU will look to maintain with their winning start against newbies Trailblazers from 10am.

Prisons handed KPA their first and only loss of the regular season slightly over a month ago during the 6th leg.
