Parliament gives NOCK ultimatum to hold polls within 2 weeks
By Print Reporter, July 4, 2025Kenyan Parliament has given the National Olympic Commitee of Kenya (NOC-K) two weeks to hold its eagerly awaited elections or ship out.
NOC-K has also been directed to use the initial list provided by the Sports Registrar to conduct the polls that have so far been adjourned twice.
The Parliament has also directed NOC-K President Paul Tergat, not to babysit any candidate, and instead, should reign supreme by taking charge and showing solid leadership now that it is direly needed at the federation now.
The firm decision was arrived at on Thursday in Nairobi at a meeting where the two warring factions; Team New Dawn led by Shadrack Maluki and
the NOC-K Service Team led by Francis Mutuku, appeared before the Departmental Committee on Sports and Culture which was steered by Webuye Member of Parliament Dan Wanyama.
‘You are hereby directed to withdraw all the pending court cases and hold the elections as soon as possible, the timeline given is two weeks. Let everyone in the Sports Registrar’s list to take part in the polls without any prejudice,” Wanyama directed.
The factions pledged to stop their appealing and counter appealing antics in courts, promising to withdraw all the pending cases by Monday.
The Wanyama led Committee, that also included honourables Muhanda Elsie, Charles Ngusya Nguna, Letipila Dominic, Paul Ekwom Nabuin, Richards Yegon and Jackson Kosgei, told the factions to stop playing with emotions of Kenyans and athletes at large.
“All these technicalities involving the courts are being manufactured by you people who are also the same candidates in these elections. Kindly hold the polls as soon as possible, if you are popular you will win,if you are not, there is next time. Don’t hold our athletes hostage,” Wanyama stated.
“I have been in sports for a very long time, we know this game that you are playing. Stop this ukora (willfulness).
“Your back and forth movements in courts are messing up with our sportsmen and women. Stop being selfish! Don’t allow the courts to run your institutions,” Wanyama told the opposing rivals.
He added: “Put Kenya first. We all know your hidden agenda, which is to extend your periods in office. This will not be tolerated. NOC-K must have elections which are free and fair, without malice to any candidate. If you proceed with the way you are behaving, soon you will be shipped out. We will not allow our athletes to suffer because of your hidden and selfish agenda,” Wanyama ranted.
Tergat was in unison with Wanyama, stating that the delayed polls have already caused athletes anguish as some of their preparations for international events have alrady been delayed.
The first time the polls were adjourned was on April 24 following internal wrangles by four NOC-K affiliates namely the Kenya Handball Federation, the Kenya Volleyball Federation, the Kenya Taekwondo Federation and Triathlon Kenya on who between their chairmen and secretary generals were eligible to cast votes in the polls.
The elections were suspended for the second time on June 19 following an Eldoret high court petition that was filed by Team New Dawn who had decried irregularities.‘Gatsbys’ of the Gulf
