Siaya County Governor James Orengo has led celebrations, praising Siaya school students for their stellar performances in the regional games.

Taking to his X early Sunday morning, July 13, 2025, Orengo wrote, “Congratulations to Our Champions in the Nyanza Regional Secondary Schools Ball Games! Your hard work, determination, and teamwork have brought honour to Siaya County.”

The regional games, held at Kisumu Boys High School, attracted over 60 schools from across the region. But Siaya stood out, clinching top honours in key categories. St Mary’s National School Yala took home the boys’ rugby and basketball titles, continuing its legacy as a sporting powerhouse.

The school is known for its rugby history, including a national championship in 2003 and a bronze medal finish in 2017 that earned it a spot in the East African Games.

Meanwhile, Ngiya Girls National School triumphed in girls’ basketball, while Nyakongo Girls won the volleyball championship, signalling a rise in female sports talent in Siaya.

Photos posted alongside Orengo’s message showed the victorious teams standing proudly with their trophies, their faces reflecting a mix of joy and determination. The community quickly joined in the celebrations, with locals like Abdikadir M. and Richard Odhiambo sending congratulatory messages on X.

The success comes at a time when the region is focusing on expanding sports beyond traditional games. This year’s Nyanza regional event included chess and table tennis, aligning with efforts to nurture diverse talents and promote mental wellness.

A 2021 study by the Journal of Adolescent Health highlighted the role of sports in reducing anxiety and improving mental health among students—a benefit that resonates with the current generation of athletes.

Orengo expressed confidence that Siaya teams will carry this momentum to the national stage, wishing them success. “Go forth and fly the Siaya County flag even higher. We believe in your ability to bring home the national trophies!” he urged.

As the national secondary school games approach, Siaya’s champions are preparing to show that rural schools can match—and even outshine—Kenya’s established urban giants.
