Kenya’s tennis sensation Angella Okutoyi led from the front as the national women’s team began their quest for promotion in the Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III with a commanding 3-0 victory over Tunisia in Windhoek, Namibia, on Monday, August 4,2025.

Okutoyi, 21, showed why she remains Kenya’s top-ranked player as she defeated Tunisia’s Mouna Bouzgarrou in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, to extend Kenya’s lead in the tie after teammate Melissa Nanjala Mwakha had given the team a flying start.

Mwakha, playing the opening singles rubber at the Central Tennis Court in Olympia, dropped just one game as she dismantled Lina Soussi 6-1, 6-0 in dominant fashion, putting Kenya firmly in control early in the tie.

Clean doubles finish

With Kenya already 2-0 up in the best-of-three format, Okutoyi returned to court for doubles action, this time pairing with Cynthia Wanjala. The duo comfortably beat Tunisia’s Bouzgarrou and Ranim Rassil 6-1, 6-3, to seal the clean sweep and underline Kenya’s intention to finally earn promotion to the Europe/Africa Group II.

Team Kenya now sits top of Group C after the opening round of fixtures. The group also features Algeria and Zimbabwe, with each nation playing in a round-robin format from 4 to 6 August.

Eyes on promotion

The duo are eager to right the wrongs of 2023 and 2024, when they narrowly missed promotion after finishing third on both occasions. This time, with a strong squad including Stacy Yego and Alicia Owegi, they are determined to go all the way.

According to tournament format, winners of each of the four pools will proceed to a second round-robin from 7 to 9 August to determine the final standings. The top team will earn promotion to the Billie Jean King Cup Europe/Africa Group II in 2026.

Meanwhile, the bottom teams from each pool will also face off in a separate round-robin to decide the team that gets relegated to Africa Group IV.

Kenya next plays Algeria on Monday, 5 August, hoping to maintain their unbeaten momentum.
