Mary Moraa, Wycliffe Kinyamal, and Daniel Simiu emerged victorious in their respective races as curtains fell on the 13th edition of the National Police Service Athletics Championships held at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.

Moraa, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, claimed victory in the 800m event.

In the 5,000 m race, Simiu successfully defended his National Police Service title following a blistering performance.

The outing sealed a proper warm-up for the 2023 silver medalists in the men’s 10,000m ahead of the national trials for the 2025 Tokyo World Athletics Championships scheduled for September.

Meanwhile, Wycliffe Kinyamal impressed with a strong showing in the middle-distance events.

The Commonwealth champion showed his grit and class to emerge the winner.

His victory came on the backdrop of his third-place finish in the 800 m race in the Doha Diamond League.

The Kenyan finished behind Botswana Tshepiso Masalela and Bryce Hoppel of the United States.

Wednesday’s event was graced by Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo.

The competition’s 13th edition witnessed top-tier athletes from various regions and units within the service, all vying for a spot on the NPS team that will advance to the national qualifiers for Team Kenya.

Opening Day

Among the highlights of the opening day races were wins from Abel Kipsang.

Kipsang powered through the men’s 1500m race en route to securing victory for the Eastern region. The victory came after his triumphal run in the Kipkeion Classic race.

In the men’s 10,000m event, World Championships silver medalist Simiu had lived up to expectations by cruising to victory while representing the Rift Valley region.

In a separate confirmation, Athletics Kenya (AK) on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, confirmed that it will use this year’s Prefontaine Classic, the Eugene Diamond League meeting, to select the men’s 10,000m and women’s 5000m teams to represent the country at this year’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

In a statement, AK said, the event slated for Thursday, July 5, 2025, in Oregon, United States, could aptly provide athletes for the two disciplines.

AK Statement

“Kenya has a rich history and connection with this prestigious event where several of our athletes have, over the years, shone and etched their names in record books with memorable performances,” a statement from Ak stated.

“It is on the backdrop of these outstanding exploits that we are convinced that this year’s national trials for the two disciplines will be equally competitive, thus producing a final team of world-class athletes capable of sweeping the podium in Tokyo,” the statement added.

AK further confirmed that qualifications for two additional events will be announced at a later date.

“Selection of the athletes to represent Kenya in the men’s 5000m and women’s 10,000m will be undertaken during the national trials set for a yet-to-be-confirmed venue, a part of the AK statement read.
