Paris Olympics: NOC-K releases lean delegation after sustained pressure

By , July 18, 2024

The National Olympics Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) has finally released the delegation for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The move follows sustained pressure on the Ministry of Sports from the public, who wanted to know the people who have been cleared to attend the global July-August showpiece in France.

NOC-K had already released the team of players that will represent the country, but that did not slow down the pressure as Kenyans wanted to know the non-sporting delegation chosen for Paris.

Meanwhile, Principal Secretary for Sports Peter Tum and the chairmen of the Senate and Parliamentary Committees on Sports, Julius Murgor and Dan Wanyama. Other officials are Kipchoge Keino, Humphrey Kayange, Francis Mutuku, and Jackson Tuwei, the Athletics Kenya President.

Kenya will send a total of 124 athletes and technical staff from six different categories.

Tum’s assurance

After the government introduced austerity measures to curb expenditure, PS Tum, however, said the ministry would accord support to those who want to attend the games by their own means.

“We would like as many Kenyans to go cheer our boys and girls in Paris. Our athletes are our superheroes and bring us much joy. We shall therefore accord maximum support to those who want to go cheer them on in Paris, as long as you are prepared to pay for your travel and accommodation there,” Tum told the press.

There are only eight days before the games begin in Paris with high hopes that the Kenyan team, which consists of supers stars like Eliud Kipchoge as well as Faith Kipyegon, will win multiple gold medals.
