Nairobi County opens refurbished basketball court in Jericho estate
Nairobi County Government will partnered with Hennessy and Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) to identify partners who would sponsor four basketball teams in the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) leagues.
This was announced during the official opening of the newly refurbished basketball court in Jericho estate at the weekend.
“On behalf of Governor Sakaja, it is my pleasure this afternoon to once again be part of this noble cause of launching the Jericho basketball court. This facility will benefit at least five sub counties, namely Makadara, Embakasi South, Embakasi West, Kamukunji, and Starehe. World renowned cognac brand Hennessy will also aim to improve, equip, and engage communities from the informal settlement to take up basketball. Who knows, Nairobi might produce the first NBA or WNBA player. We are working closely with Hennessy, to ensure that the people of Nairobi benefit. We appreciate the immense support,” said Brian Mulama, County Executive for Talent, Skills and Care.
He added: “This partnership will not only bring dignity to this area as the youth will have a decent basketball pitch to play and train on. It will also provide a huge opportunity for them to excel and get scouted by local, regional, and international scouts.”
Speaking at the event the County Executive for Innovation and Digital Economy Mike Gumo said it was encouraging to see partners like Hennessy coming on board and partnering with the county.
“I want to appreciate the support you have given the Sports sector and will be looking forward to partnering with you in the digital space. We are keen on forming partnerships with organisations like Hennessy because such a facility ensures that public spaces where children and young adults can learn and practice sound skills,” he said
Mulama added: “Statistics show that ages between 13 to 35 years old in the informal settlement stands at 60 per cent. Being the highest number that is unemployed and exposed to crime and hard drugs usage, this project will create an avenue where the youth can come together for a better course. Thank you to the partners and key stakeholders who have ensured that the Jericho Basketball court is launched today. The project offers a platform where sports and welfare development are combined to empower the youth.”
The County’s Chief Officer Sports Oscar Igaida said: “The Sports department has taken Governor Sakaja’s manifesto very seriously and end of May we will have a Sports Talent search extravaganza in 6 sports disciplines, Indoor games have also been taken care of, currently we renovating the Joseph Kagethe social hall, the construction of Mwiki sports complex is ongoing as well as Kabiro social hall that will host indoor games.”
