Mvurya roots for stronger anti-doping reforms to protect Kenyan athletes

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to keeping its athletics clean, saying the country is focused on strengthening the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) and sustaining compliance with international standards.

In a statement shared on his official X account on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, Mvurya said the ongoing efforts to enhance the agency’s technical capacity and funding were critical in safeguarding the integrity of Kenyan athletes and maintaining the nation’s global reputation in athletics.

“The Government is optimistic that ongoing measures to enhance technical capacity, secure sustainable funding, and fortify policy frameworks will continue to bolster anti-doping efforts and sustain full compliance with international standards,” Mvurya stated.

He noted that Kenya has already put in place comprehensive reforms aimed at improving ADAK’s efficiency and accountability. These reforms, he said, go beyond just meeting global requirements; they are about restoring discipline, trust, and pride in Kenya’s athletes.

“The comprehensive reforms deployed to strengthen the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) not only reaffirm Kenya’s steadfast commitment to clean sport but also instil discipline and integrity among our athletes,” he added.

Kenya, one of the world’s leading producers of long-distance runners, has in recent years faced scrutiny over doping cases that threatened its standing in international competitions. However, Mvurya’s statement signals a renewed push to close the gaps that have previously allowed violations to occur.

He revealed that he had engaged key international anti-doping figures, Jonathan Taylor, Rune Andersen, and Andy Parkinson, in discussions aimed at deepening collaboration and reinforcing Kenya’s reforms.

“I engaged Jonathan Taylor, Rune Andersen, and Andy Parkinson in insightful discussions to reinforce our reforms and strengthen collaboration on anti-doping and compliance,” he said.

Mvurya also acknowledged that he was accompanied by senior government officials and Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi during the talks. “I was joined by Sports PS Elijah Mwangi and Senior Government officers,” he noted.
