It was an eventful afternoon at the Jamhuri Racetrack yesterday during the third round of the East Africa Motor Sports Club Championship with the Class 65cc proving fiery with a record 14 female riders on show.

Even before heat three in the 65cc race came through, it was already evident that it would be the highlight race of the day with two injuries being occasioned in the process.

John Njoroge who had an emphatic first heat performance was the talking point after having a nasty fall in lap six of the second heat when his bike skid under the huge dust. He had to be wheeled off in an ambulance prompting lots of worrying faces. His run overall was good and the overtakes he had on Ogwe Ngonga and Emayian Mugo were classy and well-timed with cheers from the stands. However, his run was cut short after the accident as the young rider was taken to the hospital for a medical check-up. The race was eventually won by Lewis Ogonyi who was flawless all through followed by Thuku Waweru.

In the same race, there was a moment of concern when Kigen Mutuma on his KTM bike 220 flipped and hit the ground. His lengthy treatment on the sidelines of the tracks and under the hot sun meant the race had to be yellow flagged. Despite Kigen returning, he could not manage to complete the laps required thus adjudged not to have finished the race. He, therefore, did not score points though his return to the race elicited cheers on the stands.

Meanwhile, in the 50cc category, the action was also alive and kicking with riders outdoing themselves. It was a beautiful battle between Lemayiqn Mugo, Alexander D’Souza and Dylan Hatanga in the race that was exclusively for those between 5-9 years.

Hatanga won the opening two heats. Mugo finished third and second respectively in the heats while D’Souza finished second and then third in the follow-up heats.

The Junior Ladies Class also had casualties when Mala Ngonga and Kyla Blessing were involved in a crash albeit not serious. The come-together in a sharp bend meant they lost time and finished fourth and fifth respectively. Jematia Kangogo impressively won the heat followed by Muthoni Gota and Wambui Kahiga in the third position. Jematia was particularly sublime winning the first two heats in what was a good outing with minimal errors.

This was an exclusively ladies’ affair in a day that was set aside to celebrate women in motocross.

Meanwhile, Nandi Kiplagat proved boss as she dominated the Ladies MX-85cc Class getting the better of Ivanka Yongo and Grace Mwari in all heats. Nandi’s confidence on pace and the overtakes was on another level as she at some point came through from the back to pass all riders on the combined race that also included the masters and veterans class.
