Morocco national team arrives in Nairobi ahead of CHAN tournament
The Morocco national team became the first side to land in Kenya ahead of the 2024 TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), setting the pace for the continental event which kicks off this weekend.
The two-time CHAN winners touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi at 4:00 am on Monday and were warmly welcomed with a traditional East African reception, including music and cultural dancers.
Their early arrival signals serious intent as the Atlas Lions prepare to chase a historic third CHAN title. They previously lifted the trophy in 2018 and 2021, and are now aiming to become the first nation to win the tournament three times.
“We are excited to be here and ready for CHAN. I already love Nairobi; the weather is great, and we are looking forward to a successful tournament,” said defender Marouane Louadni, who plays for Moroccan side AS FAR.
Morocco are in Group A alongside hosts Kenya, Angola, DR Congo, and Zambia. They begin their campaign on Sunday against Angola at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

Morocco prepare with purpose
Before flying to Kenya, Morocco completed a high-intensity training camp where they played friendlies against Burkina Faso and secured a convincing 6–0 victory over Chad. This preparation shows they are not only physically ready but also focused on tactical sharpness.
Their presence in Nairobi also adds excitement to the city as it gears up to host part of the prestigious tournament. With less than a week to go, fans are showing great interest, and CAF has already activated the ticketing process across the venues.
The 2024 CHAN, scheduled to run from 2 to 30 August, is a unique tournament that features only players active in their domestic leagues. It offers a rare stage for local talent to showcase their skills internationally.
This year’s edition will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, a first in the tournament’s history, and serves as an important build-up for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which the three East African nations will also co-host.
Other teams in Group A are expected to arrive soon. Zambia is set to land on Tuesday, while DR Congo and Angola are scheduled to arrive on Thursday.
Morocco’s head start could give them the edge as they aim to make CHAN history once again.
