Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has revealed how he has had to rely on Francis Kimanzi as he settles into his new job.

McCarthy took over from Kimanzi, who was an interim head coach since Engin Firat resigned last year. The South African was appointed as the new boss for the men’s national team and has even named his first provisional squad set to take part in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

To deliver his duties, McCarthy said he has had to rely on Kimanzi.

“I was not fortunate enough to watch a lot of matches. I did not get a wide variety of knowledge of the players. I had to rely on Coach Francis and the coaches, who have been part and parcel of the team.

“I also watched some videos. I know it is not ideal, but considering the time I came in was not enough. I am glad I did because maybe I could have missed a hidden gem,” McCarthy said as quoted by FKF.

McCarthy was in charge of a training session on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, and said it was a good experience to interact with the players.

“It was a good experience for some of the young players we have called up. It was nice for me to know them and for them to understand how I like to work.

“They (the players) did very well on the first day. They adapted to what I wanted very well. I have good quality, which surprised me. It will benefit the country and the team,” he concluded.

McCarthy is preparing Harambee Stars for the World Cup qualifiers against Gabon and The Gambia.
