Lone female driver Maxine Wahome storms into WRC3 victory

Kenya’s only female driver in this year’s edition of the WRC Safari Rally – Maxine Wahome, has done the unthinkable.

With her debut appearance at this year’s WRC Safari Rally behind the wheels of a new M-Sport Poland Ford Fiesta Rally3, Wahome has won the WRC-3 category after leading the charts in the final stages.

Despite experiencing a mild computer glitch on Saturday morning that saw her lose almost six minutes, Maxine together with her navigator Murage Waigwa recovered well to head back to the top table standings describing her experience as, “thrilling and exciting to be leading the big boys”.

Speaking on Sunday after her opening round, the 26 year old said, “I am feeling excited and enjoying every bit of it. I am happy to be leading the boys. The car is completely different from the one I used last year but I am getting used to it, I am adjusting quickly.”

Jeremy Wahome was second while MacRae Kimathi who is also in the FIA Rally rising star team came third.

Speaking at the Safari Rally final Podium, President Uhuru Kenyatta congratulated Maxine Wahome for her win promising to support her in her future championships.

“I want to congratulate our very own Maxine Wahome. You have proved that the world of motorsport is not the world of men but mankind,” said President Uhuru Kenyatta.
