Matano plays down transfer talk, says at Tusker to stay
Coach Robert Matano has confirmed his stay with FKF Premier League side Tusker FC ahead of the new season.
The 59-year-old Matano finished last season without silverware, with the Brewers losing the league title to Gor Mahia on the final day, and suffering a 1-0 defeat against Kakamega Homeboyz in the final of the Mozzart Bet FKF Cup.
The outcome elicited talks on social media that Matano was on his way out of the Brewers, a club he joined in 2018 from AFC Leopards. He was also linked with a move to Bandari, who later denounced his acquisition by confirming Twahir Muhiddin as the coach on a two-year renewable contract.
“I am at Tusker to stay,” Matano, who has already run down his contract with the Brewers, told People Sport, when asked about his future endeavours, adding: “Tusker is my home and will be here next season.”
After Tusker’s defeat to Homeboyz, Matano gave a clear indicator that he could be staying at the Ruaraka-based outfit by hinting at overhauling the team’s squad for fresh legs so they can be able to challenge for titles next season.
“Actually we have lost because of our own mistakes, we have won against ourselves, it is very sad, very sad to lose this way and we need to go back and reflect and at least get new players with character, players who can sustain pressure throughout a game,” he said.
“Against Homeboyz, we have played as if we don’t have players who can sustain pressure. We needed to be the best in the game but we slept, so we will have to get players with character, players who can stand and fight for the team.
We will sit down look at the areas to strengthen, go out and try to bring in quality players, those who can try to push us forward, otherwise we tried against a very good Homeboyz side but we lost.”
People Sport further noted that Matano has already inked a one-year deal to lead the Brewers in the upcoming campaign.
