Mary Moraa sails to women 800m semis as Mawia misses out
World Championships bronze medallist Mary Moraa comfortably won her heat to advance to the semi-final of the women’s 800m in the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
Moraa clocked 1:59.22 to win the opening heat ahead of Uganda’s 2019 World Champion Halima Nakaayi who timed 1:59.35 to finish second and secure the second available automatic qualification slot.
Her time was the third fastest across the three Heats. The women’s 800m had three semi-finals heats, which paved way for the final on Saturday.
Moraa reckons that the least she could have collected from the World Athletics Championships in Oregonwas a silver medal in the 800m, therefore the Games have offered her a chance for redemption.
However, the 2017 World Under-18 400m silver medallist ended up getting bronze, losing the quest to Olympic 800m champion Athing Mu of USA and Keely Hodgkison from England.
“I slightly didn’t get my calculations well, especially in the last 150m when I let Mu widen the gap and Hodgkison overtook me,” said Moraa.
With Mu missing in action, Moraa is not mincing her words as she prepares for her remaining races.
“I have brought war to Hodgkison’s doorsteps….it’s revenge time,” Moraa sounded the war drums at Britain’s second largest city.
“I knew I would take silver but she took it. My mission here is obvious.”
