Marsabit Mixed Secondary School has etched its name into Kenya’s rugby history books, qualifying for the National 7s Championship for the first time.

Their remarkable run at the Eastern Region games has turned heads, with the team showing grit, heart, and ambition in equal measure.

“Marsabit Mixed Secondary School has made history, punching their ticket to the National 7s for the first time,” read a statement from Kenya Rugby on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

Their campaign was defined by fearless performances as they dramatically stormed past established sides. In the quarterfinals, they pulled off a stunning 21-19 win over Kitui, a team with a deeper pedigree in the competition. They followed that up with a hard-fought 12-5 victory over Miathene in the semifinals to secure their place in the nationals.

“They lit up the Eastern Region games with fearless performances—stunning Kitui 21-19 in the quarters and powering past Miathene 12-5 in the semis,” the statement read.

Although Marsabit Mixed finished second overall in the region, the achievement marks a watershed moment for the team, which has never before featured at the national level.

“They finish second overall, but this is a golden moment for them,” Kenya Rugby emphasised.

Rift Vally 7s trials

As Marsabit Mixed prepare for their maiden appearance at the National 7s, attention also shifts to talent identification at the grassroots level. After successful trials in the Western region, the focus now moves to the Rift Valley.

“After successful trials in the Western region, the Rift Valley region is up at St Patrick’s Iten,” Kenya Rugby confirmed.

The Under-18 trials are scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the renowned St Patrick’s Iten grounds. These will be followed by the Under-16 trials, which will take place on Monday, July 14, 2025.

“The Under-18 trials will be happening today (13th), followed by the Under-16 slated for tomorrow (14th),” the statement added.

Players selected from these trials will later converge with other regional standouts during the national trials, where a provisional national squad will be selected. It’s part of Kenya Rugby Union’s ongoing effort to deepen the talent pool and build future national teams from the grassroots up.

“The selected players will meet with other selected players from other regions during the national trials, where a provisional national squad will be selected.”
