KDF emerge overall winners at the Athletics Kenya National Championships
KDF are the winners of the 2024 Athletics Kenya National championships after amassing 49 medals over the two-day event held at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.
National Police finished second with 34 medals while Kenya Prisons came third in the table with 19 medals as curtains closed on the event that will form basis for Athletics Kenya to pick the team that will head to Cameroon for the week long Africa games slated for 15-22 June, 2024.
Meshack Babu timed 10:35s to edge out Mark Otieno in the men’s 100m finals to bag the national honours.
The women’s 100 saw Esther Mbagari 11.77s of Prisons beat Police duo of Monicah Sefania 11.93s and Eunice Kadogo 12.01s for the championship.
In the men’s 200 finals, Mike Mokamba clocked a 20.62s to lead a tight podium of Samuel Chege 20.63s and Dan Kiviasi 20.71s.
Prison’s Kipng’etich Ngeno clocked 1:45.03 to defend his 800m men Athletics Kenya National Athletics Championships title ahead of Stanley Kebenei (KDF) while Olympic silver medalist 1500m Timothy Cheruiyot (Prisons) won bronze.
Police clean sweep
The women’s 400m saw Police sweep the podium places: Mercy Chebet 51.81s, Gladys Jepkemboi 52.13s, Veronica Mumbe 52.60s.
Kenya Prison’s Lilian Odira clocked 2:02.21 to become 800m national champion at the second day of the AK National Championships. She finished ahead of Sarah Moraa 2:02.36 of police and Mueni Kalimi 2:03.24 of KDF.
The men’s 1500m saw Kenya Police’s Brian Komen lead clock 3:37.91 ahead of Central Rift’s Josphat Kipkirui 3:38.87 and Prisons’ Boaz Kiprugut 3:39.23.
In the women’s 1500m, Central’s Mary Ekilu clocked 4:08.05 to lead the pack, Caroline Nyaga of police second on 4:09.07 while Western ‘s Nancy Cherop closed the podium with a 4:12.03.
KDF dominate steeplechase
KDF’s Mercy Wanjiru won the women’s 3000m steeplechase finals in 9:45.08 to become the 2024 Athletics Kenya National Champion. Leah Jeruto and Judy Jepkoech finished second and third respectively.
Joy Cheptoyek of Uganda had pipped Kenyan competition to win the women’s 10000m on the first day of the meet.
