Kenya’s Malkia Strikers registered a faulty start in their volleyball campaign in the Paris Olympics after falling to a 3-0 defeat to Brazil in their opening duel at South Paris Arena on Monday, July 29, 2024.

The two-time Olympic champions from South America managed to register straight sets of 25-14, 25-13, and 25-12 to hand Kenya an opening loss.

The win for Brazil was characterised by strong serves and lethal strikes that Malkia Strikers found trouble dealing with.

Despite having in their ranks experienced stars Edith Wisa, Veronica Adhiambo, Aggripina Kundu, Triza Atuka, and Pamela Odhiambo, the Malkia Strikers failed to stamp authority against Brazil.

“Kenya faced a tough match against Brazil, going down 0-3 (25-14, 25-13, 25-12) in our 2024 Paris Olympic Games opener in Pool B. It wasn’t our day, but the journey continues. Keep pushing, and let’s come back stronger,” Malkia Strikers noted in a post on Facebook after defeat to Brazil.

Kenya will play to try and salvage their campaign when they meet Poland on Wednesday in another group game. The Europeans defeated Japan 3-1 when they opened their respective campaigns.

Brazil vs Kenya head-to-head

Meanwhile, this was another showdown between the East African heavyweights and Brazil. They had met eight times before, and going into the Paris showdown, Brazil were pre-match favourites given how they had overpowered Kenya in their previous duels.

Kenya and Brazil have met at the World Cup, World Championships, and the Olympics, with Brazil winning all 21 sets played against in those duels.
