Lionesses outclass rivals, bag best player awards
The Kenya Lionesses rugby sevens women’s team won the women’s Safari Sevens edition courtesy of big wins with two Lionesses players Janet Okello and Grace Adhiambo bagging the three individual awards.
After a thrilling final Lionesses rammed Uganda 29-12 to finish unbeaten.
Lionesses B tied 10-10 with Zimbabwe to bag silver as neighbouring Uganda clinched bronze.
Southern African sides Zimbabwe and Titans Rugby Academy finished fourth and fifth respectively in the 5-team women’s round robin event that was played concurrently with the men’s event.
Janet Okello scooped two of the three individual awards for her contribution to Lionesses run in the event where she was the top try scorer to earn the Most Valuable Player trophy, while playmaker Grace Adhiambo was the top points scorer of the tournament with a contribution of 56 points.
Meanwhile, in the men’s category Alvin “Buffa” Otieno was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament after running riot in the finals to score the opening try of the main cup finals that assisted Shujaa beat Germany 12-5 for the title.
Buffa was also a top try contributor for Shujaa in the tournament despite coach Namcos fielding him for about half of each match he featured except the final.
Samurai International captain and HSBC top try scorer Collins Injera, Gideon van der Merwe of South Africa All-Stars Academy and Alejandro Sanchez de la Rosa of Spain bagged the top try scorer award tied after the trio scored six tries each in the two-day event that saw impressive Uganda Cranes men’s team finish fifth while their scrum half Aaron Ofoyrwoth was the top points scorer of the tourney.
